The Prep Post is an annual magazine produced by Sevenoaks Preparatory School, Kent. 

The magazine is distributed to the parents of current and prospective students. It showcases pupils’ work and achievements, and updates readers on school news and events.

To produce the Prep Post, Cherry Red Designs takes work created by students and presents it in neat, ordered layouts that are easy to navigate.

Tormead magazine is an annual publication produced for Tormead School, Guildford.

The Ousel is an annual magazine produced for Bedford School.

The magazine is distributed to the parents of current and prospective students and past pupils. It showcases the boys’ activities and achievements, and updates readers on school news and events.

For The Ousel, Cherry Red Designs employs beautiful imagery set within a clean, structured page layout which showcases the images to their best potential, whilst also accommodating quite lengthy articles.

We also make sure each page captures the passion of the students, and shows how much they are enjoying their time at the school and the opportunities it affords them.

Cherry Red Designs also delivers pages for The Ousel which highlight news and events for the Bedford School Association and the Old Bedfordians Club. These pages contain a lot of information, and again, a clean structured layout is employed to make these pages as easy to navigate as possible.

The Dragon is an annual magazine published by St George’s Ascot, which is distributed to parents and school alumni.

Cherry Red Designs was commissioned to produce a magazine that felt aspirational and mature, but also captured the talents and passion of its pupils.

This was achieved by using large-scale images, an eye-catching colour palette and a clean, simple design style that appeals to readers of all ages.

Sevenoaks Literary Festival takes place every year and Cherry Red Designs was approached to give the annual brochure a fresh, new design.

A vibrant colour palette was employed, a dynamic cover image was sourced and a neat, orderly layout was used to make the brochure clear and accessible to the reader.

The design was then adapted to produce banners and posters which were placed in prominent areas in Sevenoaks town to promote the event. These marketing materials needed to be as eye-catching as possible whilst providing all the information needed to find out more and purchase tickets.

Gemmology Rocks is a business, a school and a way of thinking and working for the modern gemstone, jewellery and pawnbroking industry. The founder of this business asked Cherry Red Designs to produce a prospectus detailing the courses available to potential clients and what those courses consist of.

The logo for this business is very clean and precise, so the design of the prospectus needed to have a similar feel. A limited colour palette was created and a neat, ordered layout was employed and high quality images were selected to illustrate the content.

Cherry Red Designs was asked to produce a logo for a new Country And Western radio station called UK Calling.

The logo needed to represent the genre of music being played, so a number of designs were put forward using icons to represent the music and a font that would be suitable. The logo was then produced in a number of different colours and applied to stationery and merchandise that could be given away at roadshows and other events.

The logo needed to work at both small and large scale, so needed to be simple and clear. The resulting logo met the brief and gave an up to date look to the radio station.

Cherry Red Designs was asked to redesign Gardening By Design’s business cards. The brief was to keep the logo the same and present the information on the back of the card in a clearer, more accessible format. A colour palette was created based on the colours used in the logo.

Cherry Red Designs produced several pieces of marketing material for the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford.

These included flyers, a newsletter and various adverts to publicise the shows appearing at the theatre.

Imagery was provided and then was presented in a dynamic way to best represent the theatre and shows on offer there.

Girl Talk is a lifestyle magazine aimed at girls aged 7 - 12. It celebrates friendship, pop music, TV and fashion.

Every page in Girl Talk is packed with photos, puzzles and fun, therefore the challenge was to create layouts that were clean, ordered and easy for young readers to navigate.

In addition to creating Girl Talk layouts, it was necessary to direct dozens of photo shoots for the magazine. The images produced from these shoots were essential in creating compelling covers and exciting content.

It's Hot! was a monthly magazine aimed at girls aged 9-13. It was published by the BBC from 2002 - 2007.

The magazine featured the hottest pop stars of the day, and also gave young readers content that celebrated their favourite TV shows and movies.

Most of the content for It’s Hot! was Q&A interviews with pop stars, so the challenge was to present this copy in an exciting and engaging way.

To achieve this,  photo shoots were carefully planned to gather original images which were used to create colourful and dynamic layouts that brought the words to life.

Computer and Video Games was a monthly magazine aimed at gamers of all ages.

The magazine regularly showcased new releases, reviews and reports on gaming conventions. It also included concept features that explored the burgeoning culture of video gaming.

Each page was crammed with content, so it was necessary to devise ways to produce layouts that presented an avalanche of information in an ordered and coherent fashion.

It was also important to develop interesting ways to use supplied game artwork, so that Computer and Video Games looked different to rival publications. 

Illustrators were also commissioned to create original art for the magazine’s showcase features.

Amy was a monthly magazine aimed at girls aged 5-8. It offered readers fun activities and features on friendship, all with a subtle educational element.

As Amy was a brand new launch, the first task was to chose the magazine’s colour palette and library of fonts. Then the magazine masthead was designed, which was used on a variety of marketing materials both in print and online.

In addition, regular page templates were created for Amy and relationships with illustrators were built. 

The final task was to manage the handover process, which involved briefing an in-house design team at the BBC who created the monthly publication after launch.

Robin Hood Adventures was a biweekly magazine launched to tie-in with the BBC television show. It was aimed at boys aged 6-11.

A key role was played in the magazine launch, which included designing a layout style that captured the thrills of the action-packed TV show, choosing a colour palette, a library of fonts and engaging illustrators.

Templates were then created for the magazine that were picked up by a regular in-house design team at the BBC, after a seamless handover took place.

Cherry Red Designs also collaborates with clients in the Kent area such as St Nicholas Church in Sevenoaks.

Working closely with St Nicholas, Recharge magazine is regularly produced and distributed to parishioners.

Cherry Red Designs also produces promotional materials for St Nicholas to advertise upcoming events, and a special book charting the history of the church.

In addition to its magazine portfolio, Cherry Red Designs also works on a variety of book projects.

Keeping Cargoes Dry is a specialist book that provides operational and loss-prevention guidance for the delivery of cargo by sea.

It was necessary to work closely with the writer to present complex information in a clear and concise way and transform hand-drawn sketches into scale diagrams, which became a key tool in explaining the book’s most complicated concepts.

Shooting Times & Country Magazine is a weekly publication that celebrates countryside pursuits and conservation. 

As much of the content lacks strong illustrations or photos, the challenge was to create layouts that engaged readers and kept them coming back for more.

This was achieved by working closely with picture editors to source the best possible photographs, and experimenting with new fonts and layouts to give this heritage magazine a fresh new look.

The design challenge was doubled as the magazine is weekly. This meant all work had to be planned and commissioned weeks in advance, and it was essential to be flexible and replace features when last minute news stories broke.

Impressed by previous work produced for the BBC and IPC Media, Waitrose approached Cherry Red Designs to design Easter-themed activity pages for its Waitrose Weekend in-store magazine.

The brief was to create puzzles for children featuring regular characters from Waitrose Weekend, each of which came with a biography to be used when creating appropriate activities.

Cherry Red Designs created the puzzles, chose a colour palette based on existing artwork, and delivered print-ready files to a tight production schedule.

Cherry Red Designs also produces original illustrations, including this A-Z that was designed for my daughter.

Other illustrations have also been used on a variety of products for children, which were cover-mounted as promotional gifts on BBC magazines such as Girl Talk and It’s Hot!
