Computer And Video Games Magazine (Emap / Dennis)
Computer and Video Games magazine was a monthly publication aimed mainly at males spanning a broad age range from teenagers to thirty somethings. The content focused purely on computer and video games, reviewing games, publicising new releases, covering famous video games conventions around the world and also concept pieces dealing with the culture of video gaming and quite often looking back retrospectively at various games and genres of games. The challenge with designing this publication was dealing the the amount of information that needed to go on each page, and finding ways of presenting it so it was ordered and coherent. A lot of the imagery used on the pages was supplied game art, but there was also a need to commission illustrators to create pieces of art to accompany certain articles.
Girl Talk Magazine (BBC)
Girl Talk magazine is a lifestyle magazine aimed at girls aged 7 - 12. The content focuses on friendship, pop music, TV and fashion. The challenge with this particular publication was to get as many elements on the page as possible whilst still retaining a clean, ordered layout so the pages were easy for the readers to navigate. Also a large part of the design involved planning and art directing photo shoots to create fun, exciting content for the magazine.
It's Hot! Magazine (BBC)
It's Hot! magazine was a monthly publication aimed mainly at girls aged 9 - 13. The magazine was primarily focused on pop music, but also dealt with TV, film, celebrity and friendships. The challenge with designing this particular publication was to take some fairly straightforward question and answer interviews and come up with ways of presenting them so they looked as exciting and engaging as possible. This was achieved by a lot of photo shoot forward planning and employing a colourful and dynamic design style to really bring the words to life.
Amy Magazine (BBC)
This was a monthly publication aimed mainly at girls aged 5 - 8. The magazine focused on fun activities and friendship with an educational element. This was a brand new project when I came to it, so I had to start from scratch setting up a colour palette, choosing a library of fonts and coming up with the 'Amy' masthead. I had to keep the target audience in mind at all times when making decisions so it would appeal to the correct readership. I set up a number of templates, forged relationships with various illustrators and created a library of page furniture before handing the publication over to a newly set up team who then became responsible for its creation each month.
Robin Hood Adventures Magazine (BBC)
Robin Hood Adventures was a fortnightly magazine created to be a tie-in with the BBC television show. It was aimed mainly at boys aged 6 - 11. This was a brand new publication so I had to choose a style to tie in with the subject matter, a colour palette and a library of fonts. Once I had created the first issue and set up a number of templates, I handed it over to the full time team who would be in charge of the magazine going forward.
Shooting Times and Country Magazine (IPC Media)
Shooting Times and Country Magazine is a weekly publication aimed at men and women. The focus of the magazine is on gunsports, countryside pursuits, conservation, and as it is weekly, news concerning the subject matter. The challenge with this publication is to present (in some cases) some fairly dry material in such a way that it engages the reader and encourages them to continue reading and trying to find the best pictures possible to illustrate the articles was a priority. Working quickly was important as the publication was weekly and quite heavily news based which meant stories and articles often had to be replaced at the last minute whilst still meeting print deadlines.
Recharge Magazine (St Nicholas Church)
This is a publication produced three times a year for the members of the St Nicholas Church congregations. It is a mixture of articles all produced to encourage the members of the church in their faith be it by reading about missions abroad or testimonies written by people about their Christian life to name but a few. The challenge with this publication is to make it look modern and up to date and not like a typical church magazine. This is achieved by sourcing good quality images to illustrate the article as very often no pictures are provided, or the images that are provided are not of a suitable quality to carry the whole design.
